The 7 Biggest LinkedIn Turnoffs for Potential Employers and Clients

April 24, 2024 - Anjolaoluwa Odusanya

Hey everyone,

Let's face it – LinkedIn is kind of a big deal. With over 700 million users worldwide (that's more people than the population of the entire United States!), it's safe to say that this platform holds some serious weight in the professional world. Whether you're looking for a job, trying to land new clients, or simply hoping to expand your network, LinkedIn can be a game-changer.

But here's the thing – not everyone on LinkedIn seems to have gotten the memo about how to use it properly. And trust me, as someone who spends way too much time scrolling through the feed, I've seen some doozies. The cold hard truth is that making these common LinkedIn mistakes can be more than just a minor blip on your professional radar – they can be downright costly.

Think about it like this: for every job posting or client opportunity you're eyeing, there are likely hundreds (if not thousands) of other candidates vying for the same spot. And in a world where attention spans are shorter than my patience for bad LinkedIn etiquette, employers and recruiters simply don't have the time or energy to sift through profiles that don't make the cut. Let's be honest, if your LinkedIn game is weak, you might as well kiss that dream opportunity goodbye.

So, if you're guilty of committing any of these LinkedIn faux pas, you could be inadvertently putting yourself at the back of the line – or worse, getting passed over altogether. And in a competitive landscape where opportunities are fleeting and attention is fleeting, that's a risk you simply can't afford to take.

But fear not, because I will be talking about everything you need to stay away from to stand out from the crowd and make a lasting impression.
So, grab your favorite beverage and let's talk about the seven biggest LinkedIn turnoffs that could be sabotaging your professional success.

1. Being a Silent Stalker: You know the drill – you connect with someone on LinkedIn, and then... crickets. No messages, no engagement, just the eerie feeling that someone's watching you from behind their screen. Seriously, it is not the way to win friends and influence people on LinkedIn. It's called social media for a reason – so let's get social, shall we?

2. Endless Self-promoting: We get it – you're awesome, and you've got the skills to prove it. But there's a fine line between self-promotion and shameless self-aggrandizement. Bombarding your connections with endless posts about how amazing you are is a surefire way to turn them off. A little humility goes a long way, people.

3. Copy-and-Paste: Have you ever noticed the same post content written by several different people? I have, and let me tell you, it's about as exciting as watching paint dry. Or received a LinkedIn message that feels like it could have been written by a robot? [I'm not judging anyone for using, but let's be real – copying and pasting the same generic message to everyone is not exactly the most personal or engaging way to start a conversation.] Take the time to craft personalized messages that show you actually care about connecting with the person on the other end of the screen. Trust me, they'll appreciate the effort.

4. Incomplete Profile: You stumble upon someone's LinkedIn profile, only to find it's as barren as the Sahara Desert. No photo, no headline, and about as much information as you'd find on the back of a cereal box. Not exactly the most inspiring first impression, right? Take the time to flesh out your profile with relevant information and a professional photo – it makes all the difference.
5. Being an Overly Political Pundit: I get it – we all have our opinions, and that's great. But turning your LinkedIn profile into a soapbox for your political views is a surefire way to alienate potential employers and clients. Unless you're specifically trying to work in politics, maybe keep those hot takes off your professional platform.

6. Serial Spamming: You know who you are – the person who bombards their connections with endless sales pitches and promotional messages. Newsflash: nobody likes a spammer. Seriously, if I wanted to be constantly sold to, I'd just turn on the TV. Instead of focusing on selling, focus on providing value to your connections. Trust me, the sales will follow.

7. Being a Ghost: Last but not least, we have the ghost – the person who disappears into the LinkedIn ether as soon as they've made a connection. Come on, don't be like that! Remember, networking is a two-way street. Take the time to engage with your connections, build relationships, and show them that you're more than just a faceless profile floating in the digital abyss.

There you have it, folks – the seven biggest LinkedIn turnoffs that could be sabotaging your professional success.

But fear not, my friends, because armed with these tips, you're well on your way to LinkedIn greatness. So go forth, connect, engage, and above all, be authentically you. And if you ever need a little pep talk or some tough love, you know where to find me.
